A connoisseur admiring the work at a shodo (calligraphy) exhibition at the Kobe Biennale Art Festival 2011 in Kobe, Japan.

The festival was a multimedia exhibition that spanned the entire city and took me several full days to visit in its entirety. I would highly recommend it to any art connoisseurs who happen to be in the area when it comes back in two years.

Quoted from the Biennale website:
We solicited submissions of works that presents the image of Kobe Biennale’s theme “kira.” The exhibition has separate sections for kanji, kana, seal engraving, avant-garde calligraphy and others. Free expression in various calligraphic works ranging from traditional to innovative styles creates the modern world of calligraphy. Calligraphic works based also on the theme “kira” will be exhibited by Hyogo Calligraphers Association .

You have a ton of fantastic shots from Japan. We recently hosted another student from Japan, and during our farewell dinner I got to play around with some Kanji calligraphy. Well deserved DD, sir. Congrats!

I've given it a shot myself, but I wasn't able to get the hang of it in a single day's session. It is much harder than it looks, and it's incredible the degree of personality that each one has.

Oh, yes. The characters are very difficult to perfect, but Kanji Calligraphy is an art form after all.

I have a little story about my first experience at that farewell dinner:

I wanted to learn the kanji for sakura so I drew it, then I chose a random image and drew that one several times. It was only after I had painted it on my jeans that one of the Japanese students told me that I had chosen the kanji character for "love." Still shake my head at that one... :ninja:

This looks so cool! XD Was the Kobe Beinanale Art Festival really all white? White floor, white walls....... it fits perfectly with the calligraphy, though. Because it's written on white and all. This is great. <3

There was a lot going on at that art festival. Calligraphy was only one of the many sections, and each was decorated a little differently. But yes, this section was all white. I didn't do a lot of touch up aside from a black and white conversion and some mild contrast adjustment.

Well it looked amazing!! Even though I go to a performing arts school, I've never really been to any of ours myself. But I know that a lot of time and hard work goes into it. I'm glad you could be there to capture the moment. :D

I would highly recommend it. Many local galleries are free to visit, and aside from just being a great environment in general, it can also provide inspiration for your own artwork.

What does the scroll say?

Unfortunately I don't have the answer to that, as I only know the basics of the hirigana writing from, and the scroll is in a very freely-interpreited kanji. However, I have updated the description to give an idea of the theme of the exhibit at least.
